Coach McGovern
Building A Foundation for Excellence
In Head Coach McGovern's first season the program went from four wrestlers to over twenty on wrestlers, and went from a win less dual meet program to a 3-11 dual meet season. In his second season with over thirty wrestlers the wrestling team finished with a 7-10 overall dual team record and moved ahead of Cornell College in the Conference standings. Expectations for the 2004-2005 season are even higher with an experienced lineup including returning IIAC place winners Ben Swan (149) and Nickolai Timbs (197) along with a talented group of thirty new recruits including: including Iowa state runner-up finishers Darrin Kaisand (149) Ryan Bixler (174). and Dan Peters (Hwt), as well as Iowa state place winner Matt Wonderlin (184), Texas state place winner David Cedeno, and NJCAA transfer James Mundy.
The coaching staff has finally developed into the kind of staff that can start getting competitive with returning National Champions Wartburg College who happen to have 9 coaches. The 2004-2005 University of Wrestling Coaching Staff Includes; Third year head Coach Jon McGovern, second year assistant coaches Phil Gillespie and Doug Lee. Former UD graduate and NCAA Qualifier Jason Gordon was just hired as a new assistant coach. Recent NCAA Academic All-American Sean Pearl is also a new addition to the staff and will help develop the lower weights. Will Kelly a former NCAA Champion and three time state champion Will Kelly will be helping with recruiting and volunteering with the program. Former NCAA Champion and Dan Hodge Award Winner Nic Ackerman has agreed to help with the program on a part-time basis. Craig Knier is also a new addition and will be volunteering to promote and direct the youth wrestling club and assist with tournament organization.
